Medjugorje – Since 1981, in a small village in Bosnia-Herzegovina named Medjugorje, the Blessed Virgin Mary has been appearing and giving messages to the planet. In Her own words She tells us, “I have come to tell the world that God exists. He is the fullness of life, and to take pleasure in this fullness and peace, you have to return to God”. The following is an account of the beginning of the Apparitions ;
On the 24th June 1981, on the hill known as Podbrdo (Apparition Hill) 6 youngsters, Ivanka Ivankovic, Mirjana Dragicevic, Vicka Ivankovic, Ivan Dragicevic, Ivan Ivankovic and Milka Pavlovic saw a beautiful young Girl carrying a little kid in her arms. They were scared at what they saw and did not come closer, even though the Woman beckoned them closer. They knew this Girl was Our Lady.
Next day, the 25th of June 1981, the youngsters went to the same place where Our Lady had appeared the previous day in hope of seeing Her again. Nonetheless the group of youngsters had modified somewhat ; Ivan Ivankovic and Milka Pavlovic were replaced by two others, Marija Pavlovic and Jakov Colo. With the flash of a light, the 6 youngsters looked up and saw Our Lady, this time without the kid.
When they reached Her, they fell to their knees and started to pray with Our Lady. Before Our Lady left the youngsters, She claimed, “God be with you my angels!” There was only 5 days where no apparitions took place. Medjugorje has been a place of peace, hope and inspiration for such a lot. The Word of God is alive in Medjugorje as well as conversion.
In Medjugorje, you may follow the group programme or choose to be on your own. Each day (in the language of your preference) you are welcome to take part the party of the Eucharist and attend talks, concerning our Blessed Mother’s messages with Monks, Idealists, nuns and others, visit to Cenacolo at the Hamlet of Bijakovici, where local workers and artisans give affidavit to Our Lady’s work in their lives.
You may visit Bijakovici to see the idealists and their houses, and to meditate at the Blue Cross Mountain. Morning climbs will be scheduled for our groups for Podbrdo Mountain (Apparition hill) and Krizevac Mountain (Cross mountain). Your guide will go with you as you follow the same path up Apparition Hill where the young idealists first faced Our Lady.
As you climb, you can see the inspired creativity of the bronze plaques picturing each mystery of the rosary and touch and pray before the cross that venerates the spot where Mary appeared to the idealists. In 1933, the townsfolk made a thirty-foot cross at Cross Mountain, to remember the 1900 year anniversary of Christ’s crucifixion.
Each evening you are welcome to join the other pilgrims and the parish community of St. James Church for the recitation of the Rosary, the celebration of the Eucharist, and prayers for the sick. On alternative evenings you’ll have the opportunity to attend the Holy Hour of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament or Veneration of the Cross.
Early afternoon talks are often held in the green tents or at the rotunda-circular podium stage at the back of St. James Church. Infrequently they’re scheduled in the evening and at the very last minute, so always listen for the announcements after the morning and evening Mass. Changes to schedules may be related also.
Group on his schedule, you can visit Pa Jozo’s parish to attend his holy preaching. When the apparitions commenced in 1981, Father Jozo was the preacher of St James parish. He is considered by many to be the highlight of a pilgrimage to Medjugorje.
The place of Our Lady’s first apparitions on the hill of Crnica is generally called Apparition Hill. It is situated a few hundred meters above the Bijakovo hamlet of Podbrdo. A steep footpath leads from the houses to the very place of the apparitions. Now a little dilated by the millions of travellers who have so far paid a visit to the place of the first apparitions, the trail has become detectable from as far away as St. James.
Many pilgrims, plenty of whom were born on flat asphalt, regularly in unsuited clothing or even barefooted, and on their knees, climbed over the sharpened stones to the place of Our Lady’s first apparitions.
Half way up the trail is located a large plain wooden cross. Here’s where on the third day of the apparitions, June 26, 1981, Our Lady appeared to the visionary Marija Pavlovic who, after having had a vision with the others at the common place that evening, ran down the hill a little ahead of the other idealists.
At this place Marija once again saw Our Lady, now with a sad face. Behind her was a huge cross and motioning with her hands she announced, “Peace, peace, peace and only peace! Peace must reign between God and man and also between men!” Today this is a place where pilgrims stop, remaining in prayer and reflection on the message given by Our Lady, directed to man, and the arena of today, which is so much in such great need of peace.
